Well, it's another sunny windy day in Moosonee. Since we are preparing to leave (see previous post) we are working on a final presentation for the work partners. After much debate we decided on a (are you ready for this?) .....duh duh da! A puppet show!!!! I am sure they will love it.
I have been sick with a sore throat lately so I have been doing a lot of reading. I just finished "The Horse Whisperer" It was a decent read but I found the ending pretty weak and cliched. Has anyone else read that book? I also read the book "The Constant Princess" That was an awesome read in my opinion but I have always enjoyed that time in history. Catherine of Aragon was a facinating woman. She had questioning morals and motovations but then again, who could blame her?
A group in our cluster, Fort Albany has had to evacuate thier house because of a gas leak so we will be sending them a care package. Everyone is still pretty tense because of the water crisis. Luckily our water isn't actually contaminated but there is the plain and simple fact that there just isn't enough of it. Who knew that a simple river break-up could cause so much trouble?
One thing about Moosonee is that there is an endless abundance of stray dogs hanging around. They are all very friendly but if you have any sort of food product on your person you instantly have 5 new friends of the furry pursuation. I know thats a random though but sitting here at work I just saw 6 dogs trot by my window. I kid you not.
I did spend a short time in Timmins for my birthday. Timmins is a nice town. It has a mine, a museum and enough Tim Hortons to keep anyone (myself included) happy. It also had a Walmart, a luxury which I had not been able to see for 6 months. The river flooding has even affected Timmins though. By the river there it is flooding the nearby park, including the basketball court, Bbq and picnic area and sun hut which is all underwater. The strange thing is that it all seems to be routine to the people. No one seems to care. It's just another flood, kind of like seeing the first robin of spring.
When I flew back to Moosonee on the 17th I forgot about the all important rules of science and took a bag of Lays potato chips on the plane with me. This was a very tiny plane which held about 12 people when full. There were about 8 of us boarded and the seat behind me was empty so I dumped my carryon there so I could have some leg room. Among the items were my chips. About midway into the flight I was inocentlly reading when a loud bang behind me caused me to jump. The other passengers where also looking around like started chickens. It turns out my bag of chips exploded sending a few crispy projectiles flying from its shiny inside and scattering chips everywhere. Oops. Lesson learned.
Well I should get going. Talk to you later.

Where is Spring? Seriously!

Well I have been here in Moosonee for nearly three months! Can you believe it? It's snowing right now as I write this! All this white stuff isn't funny anymore. Someone needs to tell the weather-person that it is nearly May. But I regress.
In 26 days I will be heading for Rivere de Loup QC. I am still working on the banquet but it has been bumped to September because the break-up of Moose River is causing a lot of problems. The town of Kashechewan had to evacutate due to flooding and Moosonee is on water restriction. As a town we need 13-15 liters pumped through the pipes per second but since there is a broken line we are only getting about 10 liters which may not sound like much difference but if it gets much lower we will have to evacuate too. In Kashechewan the water is level to the ceilings of thier basements. The poor residents won't be able to return for at least 6 weeks.
In brighter news last week I had the very exciting oppertunity to ride in a helecoper to get over the Moose River. In the winter they usually just drive over the ice and in the summer there are boat taxis but during the river break up or bad river conditions the only way to get across is helecopter. For some kids in Moose Factory, the nearby reserve across the river, catching a helecopter to get to school is as normal as catching a bus is to us.
So we are preparing to leave and also wrapping up at our jobs. If Mrs. Brossart could see my desk she would shake her head. It is pretty much either a fire hazard or I'm creating a bunker of file folders, binders and documents. Who knew that banquet planning involved so much paper? Green-peace must positivly hate me!
Also Our latest community project is painting pool characters on the walls of the community pool. Cool, huh? Leo De Vinci move over!
Well I should jet but I will leave you with these inspiring words. I honestly don't know if this is something I dreamed up or a famous quote that stuck in my subconcious. I will let you be the judge.
If you have all the answers you aren't asking the right questions!
Peace to y'all back in Saskatoon and beyond......
